A Sense for Wonder
JEREMY MAJOR
Cutting his teeth on no-budget feature films, 24-hour short film competitions, and live theatre, Major knows how to work efficiently and maximize resources with his directing. Through more than two decades of hustle and passion, his focus remains on the art & science of impactful filmmaking — finding meaning in each moment and creating connection in the performances, is at the heart of his approach.
INSIGHTS ON 25 YEARS OF DIRECTING
Below, Jeremy discusses his approach to a selection of projects
ON A MISSION
I have a mission. It goes like this:
To create otherworldly experiences that advance our inner worldliness.
What the heck does that mean? I look at it this way... Yes, storytelling should be imaginative escapist entertainment, but it can also serve to be incredibly meaningful - as in, it evolves the soul. Film for film sake is dead. It needs to resonate and point a mirror back on humanity, no matter the genre. Put a different way, I take people into a world that's new to them and offer an experience through story that enlightens them in some way.
DOCUMENTARY
PBS Documentaries
It was the best of two worlds, a documentary about one of Canada's premiere repertory theatre companies. A doc about a theatre. Cool. "Shaw Festival: Behind the Curtain" was a program geared at viewers on both sides of the Canada/US border and originally aired on WNED/PBS.It was a look behind the scenes as some of the distinctive practices of the Shaw Festival and their world-class approach to theatre. This came on the heels of a 2nd unit directing gig on the epic PBS documentary, "Hockey: More Than a Game" that set out to be the definitive documentary about hockey's history in Canada.
Creatures, Aliens, Psychological
Sci-Fi Shorts & Features
The cat's out of the bag. I love sci-fi. I was a closet sci-fi fan until I started directing in the genre. And even then, it took a couple shorts before I realized it's a bit of an addiction. "Legend of the Harvest Curse" and "Juxt" are two of many that have now led to an international co-production with the UK to direct a feature film. Stay tuned...What is it about sci-fi? Perhaps it's the imaginative aspect, and the canvas this genre provides to be able to experiment and push the boundaries. Let's face it, creating creepy is fun!But I also believe that great sci-fi should be a discussion-starter with themes that explore the depths of who we are as human beings.
HISTORIC DRAMA
Historic Perspectives
The film "The Battle of Beaver Dams: Uncommon Courage" presented a fresh perspective on the War of 1812 at the time of the bicentennial. The indigenous were the key to helping the British move the Americans out of the region. A cunning tactic changed the direction of the war at Beaver Dams and is the focus of this uniquely told scripted account.
Feature Film
Art & Love in New York
During the writing process, "Artless" started as a comedy but evolved into something darker. This relationship story juxtaposes the rise and fall of a delicate love between an artist and a poet in New York City. Filmed partially in NYC and partially in Hamilton, Ontario. Seamlessly blended, I might add!As with so many of my films, I seek opportunities to bring together my love of composing music, visual arts, and performance. "Artless" is no exception.
"Backyard" Indie
Farm Drama
My second feature film, Heartland Son, was made with a record small crew, but a whole lot of ambition and drive. This story (written by Richard Archer) tells of a fiery father-son relationship between a washed up football player and his overbearing father as the future of the family farm comes in to question. The production used three farms to create one in Souther Ontario that could stand in for the American Mid-West.
FILM FEST CHAMPS
24 Hours of Madness
If there's one thing that will tell you how skilled you are as a filmmaker, it's a 24-hour film festival. No offence to the 48-hour fests (and longer), but that's a walk in the park. That's just normal in my world. 24 hours from concept to delivery is where boys become men. We won 2 out of the 3 times we entered. It's a helluva rush.
The Filmmaking Podcast
Recently, Jeremy partnered with filmmaker & festival director Nathan Fleet to discuss the ever-changing independent film scene in Canada.A great listen for those trying to navigate this crazy industry.
